The neighbourhood walk: Kirribilli to Lavender Bay

No bookings, no tickets, no alarm. Just the slap of water against the seawall, the rumble of trains overhead, and the smell of someone else's coffee. This is the walk we do when friends visit.

The route

Start in Bradfield Park, right under the Bridge, which is perfect for a picnic later. Follow the foreshore west past Milsons Point wharf to the North Sydney Olympic Pool, where you can watch the swimmers through the glass wall at the café next door.

Next up is Luna Park. Walking through is free and you only pay for rides. Go early, because it's quiet at 8am and full of school groups by 9.

Carry on along the Lavender Bay boardwalk (fishers, joggers, the occasional tai chi group) to Wendy Whiteley's Secret Garden, a hidden, leafy garden full of winding paths and sculptures, made by the widow of artist Brett Whiteley. It's lovely in a way that makes you lower your voice.

Our tip

On the fourth Saturday of the month, the Kirribilli Markets are on, a short walk from Lou Lou, a French bakery in Milsons Point. Croissant first, markets second. That's the rule.
