Bondi to Coogee: six kilometres of 'just one more photo'

Salt on your lips, sandstone underfoot, and a rock pool below you that looks too blue to be real. The Bondi to Coogee walk is about six kilometres one way, and nobody does it in a straight line.

How long?

About an hour and a half at a brisk pace, two hours if you're sightseeing, three if you stop for coffee and a swim. (Stop for coffee and a swim.) Expect stairs and some hills, mostly in the stretch between Waverley Cemetery and Coogee.

The good bits

Bondi Icebergs, Tamarama, Bronte and its 1887 baths, Waverley Cemetery with its ridiculous ocean view, sheltered Clovelly, Gordons Bay for snorkelling, and finally Coogee. In whale season, keep an eye on the horizon.

Be sensible

Swim between the flags. Some of these beaches have strong rips, and the lifeguards are busy enough. Wear proper shoes rather than thongs, bring sunscreen, and leave the pram at home, because it isn't pram-friendly.

Getting back

The 333 bus runs between North Bondi and Circular Quay, and from the Quay it's a quick ferry home. Or start at Coogee and walk north against the crowds. Either way, you'll sleep well tonight.
